Lots of kids like to cook. Cooking and baking are super-fun and can be easy when you have the right equipment and recipes (and maybe a little help…). You get to create a little something, and then enjoy it with family and friends. You can even take cooking classes for kids!

Toll House Cookies

These are the original Toll House cookies you probably remember from when you were a kid – mmmmm!

Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup white sugar
  • 3/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 – 12 ounce package (or 2 cups) semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 cup chopped nuts (optional, but so good)

Instructions

Preheat oven to 375°.

In a small bowl, combine the flour, baking soda and salt. Set aside for a minute.

In a large bowl, combine butter, white sugar, brown sugar, and vanilla. Beat until the mixture is creamy. Beat in the eggs. Gradually add in the flour mixture. Stir in the chocolate chips and nuts.

Drop the cookie mixture by the tablespoonful on an ungreased cookie sheets. Bake for 9-11 minutes, until golden brown.

This recipe makes about 3 dozen 2 1/4″ cookies. Enjoy!

Yummy Soft Pretzels

This recipe is fun and easy for kids of all ages. Parental supervision is required for smaller kids.

Ingredients

  • 2 – 16 oz. loaves frozen bread dough
  • 1 egg white, slightly beaten
  • 1 teaspoon water
  • Coarse salt

Instructions

Separate thawed bread into 1 1/2″ balls (approximately 24). Roll each ball into a long, thin rope (approx. 14 1/2″ long).

Place pretzels one inch apart on greased cookie sheet and let stand for 20 minutes. Tip: For younger kids, have children design pretzel shapes (letters or numerals).

Combine the egg white and water, and brush the mixture onto the pretzels using a pastry or basting brush. Sprinkle with coarse salt.

Place a shallow pan containing 1″ of boiling water on bottom rack of oven; bake pretzels on their cookie sheet at 350 degrees on rack above water for 20 minutes or until golden brown.
